Donald asks…
How do I post my new book on Yahoo! for sale?
I have just published a novel, When Seasons Charge, through lulu.com and would like to use the Yahoo! site to market the book. This means, apart from banners and other forms of marketing associated with book marketing. Google calls their service Book Search and provides free advertising. Does Yahoo! do the same?

Tom answers:
You will have to skim through the full Yahoo services page and look under marketing. I don’t see one listed.
The thing about Google’s free book search is people have to have the title of your book in order to search for it. Without the title, they will never find it there without spending a lot of time skimming through pages. You still have to pay to do marketing so people know about the book. Otherwise a book search is completely useless. When I typed in “When Seasons Change”, I got 1950 books to search through. Not very easy to find. Do you think people will really look for it there?
I have to tell you the latest news in the world of self publishing. Amazon is taking off the BUY buttons for all books not published by the self publisher/POD that they own – BookSurge. I got the announcement yesterday.
This is really bad for the self publishing industry. It means that the only way you can sell on Amazon is by paying a 29.95 fee plus 55% of your cover price. PLUS you have to buy the books from your self publisher/POD and ship them to Amazon at your cost and they will ship them to the customer.
Unless you agree to that plan, you will not be able to sell books through Amazon.
As a result, expect the free advertising markets to dry up and start charging as well as everyone with a self published book scrambles for ways to promote them.
It kind of makes Uncle Jim’s law even more important – Money should flow toward the author – not away from them.
And I have my own law. Persi’s Law#1. If you believe in yourself and in your book, spend twice as much time trying to publish it traditionally as you did writing it.
This is going to do a LOT of damage to people who don’t use Book Surge. The average sales for a self published book is 100 or roughly 2/3 of the number of family and friends you have. Expect that number to go down unless you are willing to start shelling out actual money for advertising.
Self publishing is a black hole. It just costs money after money with very little results. I say that here daily. If you went to Absolute Write Water Cooler’s Bewares and Background Checks, you would see it there. Same goes with Preditors and Editors. People get burned every day. And by the way, Lulu is famous for either telling you that you had no sales or underestimating them. People complain all the time. But you really have no recourse.
BTW I don’t even see your book on Amazon.

Robert asks…
Has anyone ever used a banner or interstitials advertising company to market their site?
Does it work? Whats a good company to use for either banner or interstitials?

Tom answers:
I used to work for such a company. I’d try DoubleClick or PointRoll.

Lizzie asks…
Best kind of advertising for website?
I have a website, I make jewelry and I am wondering what is the best kind of advertising to use?
I already use Google Adwords and advertise on Facebook.
I’m thinking of trying email marketing or banner ads. What is best?

Tom answers:
The best kind of advertising is the one that finds qualified clients.
A mechanic won’t advertise in a women’s magazine, they need to put their ad in a car magazine and car sites.
A lot of the suggestions here are VERY GOOD. But I’ll as one more I think some people missed out (this one can make you a lot of money):
Create an affiliate program for your site and go around to other businesses offering them to sell your product. Talk to businesses that sell complementary products, similar products or businesses that advertise jewelry constantly.
You can even go to direct competitors! They could have a link to your site on theirs: “Can’t find what you’re looking for? Click here” and go to your site.
It’s all about how you approach them. This is an easy way to advertise to qualified customers for minimum cost.
That was my million dollar tip!
